Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are currently causing problems in parts of the Comunitat Valenciana. The heaviest rainfall has so far been in Valencia and Castellón. The situation on the Costa Blanca is considerably calmer – but the risk of rain is set to increase in the province of Alicante over the coming days.
The weather situation on Spain’s Mediterranean coast remains tense. Parts of the Comunitat Valenciana have been hit by heavy rain and thunderstorms since Monday.
Among the areas particularly affected was the region around Requena in the province of Valencia. At times, more than 55 litres of rain per square metre in one hour recorded. Roads were affected by water and mud, and flooding was also reported inside buildings.
Important for residents of the Costa Blanca: The current severe weather conditions do not affect the whole of the Comunitat Valenciana equally.
The regional emergency services had issued a warning for the south of the province of Castellón and the northern inland areas of the province of Valencia orange alert level activated due to heavy rainfall. There, up to 40 litres per square metre within an hour, or 80 litres within a few hours, were possible.
At the time of the review, there was no comparable, area-wide orange alert in place for the coastal region of the province of Alicante – that is, the Costa Blanca proper.
In the province of Alicante, AEMET distinguishes between the northern coast of Alicante and the southern coast of Alicante. The northern area includes, amongst others, Dénia, Xàbia and parts of the Marina Alta; further south lie, amongst others, Benidorm, Alicante, Santa Pola and Torrevieja.
For Alicante itself, AEMET is forecasting only a limited chance of rain on Tuesday. On Wednesday, it is expected to remain mainly dry at first. From Thursday onwards, however – and particularly as we head towards Friday – the likelihood of rain will rise significantly again.
On the northern Costa Blanca, too, the forecast already indicates increasing cloud cover. For Altea, AEMET is forecasting mainly thick cloud cover, along with moderate winds and swell, on Wednesday and Thursday.
The weather conditions will therefore remain unsettled along the Costa Blanca. According to the latest AEMET forecast, the likelihood of rain in Alicante is set to rise significantly by Friday. Showers or rain are also expected to continue on Saturday and Sunday.
It remains to be seen just how heavy the rainfall will actually be. In Mediterranean thunderstorm conditions in particular, areas of heavy rain can develop very locally.
This only became apparent in mid-September: during a heavy rainfall event at that time, more than 80 litres per square metre were recorded in Xàbia, around 68 litres in Ondara and just under 65 litres in Dénia.
Residents living between Dénia, Xàbia, Moraira and Calpe would therefore be well advised to take a closer look at this development. Due to its location and topography, the Marina Alta is regularly more vulnerable to heavy Mediterranean downpours than parts of the southern Costa Blanca.
Further south – from Alicante via Santa Pola to Torrevieja – the current weather conditions remain less pronounced for the time being. However, the risk of rain is set to increase there too as the weekend approaches.
Anyone travelling should avoid roads, underpasses, riverbeds and so-called ‘barrancos’ that are particularly prone to flooding during heavy rainfall. The Valencian emergency services expressly advise against crossing flooded roads or dry riverbeds during heavy rain.
