El Campello - coastal town between Alicante and Benidorm

El Campello: coastal town between Alicante and Benidorm

El Campello is located between Alicante and Benidorm, characterised by the Illeta, a functioning town centre and a long coastline. A compact overview

Between historic headlands, established neighbourhoods and 23 kilometres of coastline, El Campello has found a role that is neither loud nor spectacular - but remarkably stable.

If you walk along Paseo Carrer La Mar in the early morning, you will see the place as residents experience it: a functioning everyday life by the sea, characterised by movement, routines and a quiet self-confidence.

Searching for clues on the Illeta

Before El Campello gained its independence at the end of the 19th century, the area around the headland was known as the Illeta dels Banyets a crossroads of Mediterranean cultures. The archaeological zone shows Roman basins, Iberian settlement remains and an old fish processing plant - a piece of coastal history that is unique in the Marina Baixa area.

Unlike many archaeological sites, the Illeta does not look like a museum. It is located in the centre of the town, just a few steps from the harbour and embedded in everyday life. History as a neighbour, not as a backdrop.

Harbour district with a working tradition

The maritime past is not a topic of nostalgia. For decades, the small harbour was a place of work, a meeting place and an economic centre. Today it is home to leisure boats, sailing schools and rowing clubs, but the town has not forgotten what it was made of.

The watchtower Torre de la Illeta, built in the 16th century as a coastal defence, is a reminder of the time when vigilance was part of life. Many families in the old town centre still have links to fishing today - be it actively, through clubs or through the stories of their parents and grandparents.

Coast as a habitat - not as a stage

El Campello is not defined by individual postcard motifs, but by its diversity.

  • Playa Muchavista - long, wide, tidy; used by athletes, commuters, families and people who live here all year round.
  • Playa Carrer La Mar - urban section near the harbour, with a clear promenade structure and an everyday rhythm that develops between cafés, small shops and schools.
  • The small bays north of Illeta - rocky, sheltered, unagitated; places that seem almost more intimate in winter than in summer.

The coast is part of the way of life. Not a spectacle, not a promise - but a space that is utilised.

A place grows - controlled and down-to-earth

Around 29,000 people live permanently in El Campello. Many commute to Alicante, Benidorm, Sant Joan or Mutxamel; others work in the local service sector.

The municipality decided early on not to grow vertically. Residential areas such as Muchavista, Pueblo Español or Els Banyets consist of moderate building heights, mixed neighbourhoods and functional traffic axes.

The international flavour is palpable: Spanish families, European residents, young professionals - a mix that makes the place open, but never arbitrary.

Connected by tram and tradition

The Alicante-Benidorm TRAM line has a greater impact on the town than you might realise at first glance. It is a commuter line, a leisure axis and a daily clock generator - an important reason why El Campello has established itself as a place to live.

Culturally, the town emphasises regional identity. The Moros y Cristianos in October are among the most prominent celebrations in the northern province, closely followed by concerts, harbour festivals, sporting events and local initiatives that are brought together at the cultural centre.

El Campello in one sentence?

A place that doesn't want to attract attention - but gains substance the longer you stay.

Box: El Campello - everyday life by the sea, reliably designed

El Campello shows how a town between Alicante and Benidorm asserts its own role: functional, well connected and with a stretch of coastline that structures life rather than overlaying it.

There are no spectacular large-scale projects here, but rather continuous improvements: Local transport, sports facilities, cultural programmes, beach maintenance.

Anyone who wants to know how the region is developing beyond the tourist centres will find a precise example in El Campello - inconspicuous at first glance, convincing at second.
