Vehicle registration on the Costa Blanca - procedure, costs & DGT dates

Vehicle re-registration on the Costa Blanca

Register your vehicle on the Costa Blanca: ITV, registration tax, DGT Alicante and costs at a glance. Guide for residents in the province of Alicante.

Anyone who moves their place of residence to the Costa Blanca - whether to Dénia, Jávea, Calpe, Benidorm or La Zenia - must also reassess their own vehicle: a car registered in Germany may not be permanently driven in Spain with foreign licence plates. The deadline for re-registration begins at the latest after official registration as a resident.

The Spanish authorities carry out rigorous checks here. Anyone who does not register their vehicle properly risks fines, immobilisation or problems with the insurance company in the event of damage.

Why the Spanish licence is mandatory
As soon as a vehicle is permanently used in Spain, it is considered to be stationed in Spain for tax and traffic law purposes. This applies not only to the licence plate number, but also:

  • Insurance policies
  • Technical inspection intervals
  • Motor vehicle taxes at municipal level

A Spanish licence ensures legal certainty - and prevents unnecessary discussions during traffic checks.

The process - step by step

  1. Technical inspection at ITV
    ITV
Nothing works without a passed technical inspection. The ITV checks whether the vehicle complies with Spanish standards. The original vehicle documents and - if available - the European Certificate of Conformity (CoC) are required. After a successful inspection, the Spanish technical data card is issued.
  1. Admission tax (Impuesto de Matriculación)
    Agencia Tributaria
The amount of registration tax depends on CO₂ emissions and vehicle value. Payment is made at the Spanish tax office. Proof of payment is a prerequisite for further processing.
  1. Municipal vehicle tax
Impuesto sobre Vehículos de Tracción Mecánica
This annual tax is paid to the respective municipality - for example in Dénia, Benidorm or Orihuela. The amount varies depending on engine power and municipality.
  1. Appointment with the transport authority - DGT Dates
    Dirección General de Tráfico
Take all the documents to the responsible transport authority (DGT) in the province of Alicante.
Among other things, you will need
  • Vehicle licence and vehicle registration document (originals)
  • NIE number
  • Empadronamiento (registration certificate)
  • Identity card or passport
  • Tax documents
  • ITV verification

After successful processing, Spanish licence plates are assigned.

What costs can be expected?
Depending on the vehicle type and emission value, the total costs usually range between 600 and 1,200 euros.
Typical items:

  • ITV: approx. 50-120 €
  • Registration tax: depending on CO₂ value
  • Municipal tax: depending on the municipality
  • DGT fees: around €100
  • Licence plates: about 20-40 €

Gestoría: Delegate instead of organising yourself
SAB - Service Agency Baierle
If you don't want to work your way through tax forms, appointments and the Spanish language of the authorities yourself, hire a gestoría. They will take care of the entire process - for a fee of around 150 to 300 euros. This saves time and prevents formal errors, especially for new residents.
Vehicle re-registration is not a bureaucratic adventure - but it does require structure and complete documentation. Anyone who knows the procedure or uses professional support will have the process completed in a reasonable amount of time.
And it is only with Spanish licence plates that the vehicle has formally arrived where many have long been: in everyday life between Marina Alta and Marina Baixa.
