An open window, a forced patio door, ransacked drawers - burglaries are also a reality between Dénia and Villajoyosa. Flats, detached houses and urbanisations are affected - as are vehicles. For many residents, the material damage is one thing, the loss of confidence is another. The first steps after the offence are crucial.
Keep your distance - safety first
As understandable as the impulse is to check everything immediately: Anyone who notices a burglary should not enter the property at first. It cannot be ruled out that the perpetrators are still in the neighbourhood.
Emergency numbers in Spain:
Especially in urbanizaciones outside of larger cities, the Guardia Civil is often responsible.
Secure traces - do not touch anything
Windows, doors, cupboards or vehicles should not be touched. Fingerprints, tool marks or shoe prints are relevant for securing evidence. Photos from a safe distance are useful without changing the crime scene.
Video recordings from neighbours or shared facilities should also be backed up before data is overwritten.
Filing a complaint: no settlement without „Denuncia“
The police report is a prerequisite for any insurance benefit. The so-called „denuncia“ can be recorded at the relevant police station.
The Guardia Civil also provides an online form for reporting theft or vandalism in advance. Important: The report must be signed in person within 72 hours.
As a rule, the following are required:
Inform the insurance company immediately
Many policies require claims to be reported on the same day. It is worth taking a look at the policy details, especially for second homes or rented properties. In some cases, additional modules for high-value items only apply with documented proof.
The same procedure applies to vehicle break-ins: Report, document, report to the car insurance company. If ID cards or credit cards have been stolen, they should be blocked immediately.
A burglary cannot be undone. But structured action reduces consequential damage and speeds up proceedings. Coordinating police, reporting and insurance without losing time protects your claims - and gives the investigators the best possible starting point.
