Waste disposal: how to separate waste correctly

Most people know how waste separation works – but if you are unsure, here are a few helpful tips for clean and respectful disposal.

They are always the first thing that catches the eye: unkempt, overloaded and littered rubbish container sites. Yet a clean environment is not only a sign of respect for nature, but also for our fellow human beings. In the Marina Alta and Marina Baja regions, particular attention is therefore paid to the correct disposal of waste – and for good reason. Anyone who does not dispose of their waste properly here risks not only a guilty conscience, but also heavy fines. The municipality of Alfaz del Pi, for example, has recently increased the penalties for incorrectly or illegally dumped rubbish to up to €3,001. The aim is to ensure that both residents and visitors take responsibility and preserve the beauty of this coastal region. This article gives you tips on how to separate your rubbish correctly and what you need to bear in mind when disposing of garden waste, old furniture and other special cases.

Proper waste separation
In local communities, waste is divided into different categories, as is the case in almost all of Europe.
• Residual waste (grey or green bins):
This is where you put everything that cannot be recycled, such as hygiene products, nappies and soiled packaging.
• Organic waste (brown bins):
Organic waste such as food scraps, fruit and vegetable peelings, coffee grounds and tea leaves should be placed in these bins. Avoid adding plastic bags or other non-organic materials.
• Paper and cardboard (blue bins):
Paper, cardboard and cardboard packaging belong in the blue bins. Ensure that these materials are clean and dry.
• Plastic and metal (yellow bins):
Plastic bottles, cans, Tetra Paks and other plastic or metal packaging belong in yellow containers. These should be rinsed out before disposal.
• Glass (green containers with small openings):
Glass bottles and containers should be disposed of in the designated containers. Remove lids or corks before disposal.

In addition to household waste, there are special types of waste that cannot be disposed of in regular waste containers. These include garden waste, old furniture and electrical appliances.

Important Punto Limpio / ECOPARQUE

garden waste
Garden waste such as cuttings, leaves, branches and grass does not belong in normal rubbish bins. Many local authorities offer special collection services for garden waste. This waste can also be taken directly to a Punto Limpio / ECOPARQUE. Some local authorities even have special green waste bins that are put out at certain times.

Old furniture and bulky waste
Bulky waste such as old furniture, mattresses or large household items must not be thrown into normal rubbish bins. Instead, you can use your local council's collection service or take the items directly to a Punto Limpio / ECOPARQUE. It is advisable to contact your local council before disposal to coordinate the collection service.
electrical waste
Electrical waste such as old televisions, refrigerators or computers must also be disposed of separately. Many municipalities offer collection services for electrical waste. Alternatively, these items can be taken to a Punto Limpio / ECOPARQUE.

Important information for households
Cleaning of waste: Packaging and containers should be thoroughly cleaned before disposal to prevent contamination and support recycling processes.
No mixed waste: It is crucial that the different types of waste are not mixed together. Incorrect separation can significantly impair recyclability.
Waste disposal on public holidays: Please note that waste collection may be restricted on public holidays. Contact your local authority for details of the exact collection times.
So, waste separation may not be the most exciting topic, but a small contribution from each of us not only makes the environment more beautiful, but also more liveable. And let's be honest: who wants to risk being hit with a hefty fine for carelessly discarding a bottle? Better to play it safe and relax and enjoy the sun – without having to worry about waste!
