Pregnant on the Costa Blanca: Pregnancy, birth, maternity protection & financial benefits in Spain

Rights, prevention, birth and financial benefits between Dénia and La Zenia

Pregnancy brings organisation with it - medically, professionally and administratively. Those who live on the Costa Blanca benefit from the Spanish healthcare system and clearly regulated parental rights. It is crucial to take the right steps at an early stage - from the first examination in the Centro de Salud until the child is registered with the Registro Civil.

Medical care: getting started with the system

Those with statutory insurance are insured via the Seguridad Social covered. The first port of call is the relevant health centre in your place of residence - whether in Dénia, Jávea, Benidorm, Torrevieja or Orihuela Costa. There, as a rule, a matrona (midwife) coordinates the pregnancy, creates the „cartilla de embarazo“ and plans the further appointments.

Privately insured persons can also freely choose specialists or select a specific clinic for the delivery. Important: Clarify the scope of services and waiting times with the insurance company in good time.

Preventive medical check-ups in the public system

Statutory prenatal care includes, among other things

  • Three regular ultrasound examinations (per trimester)
  • Regular blood and urine tests, including screening for gestational diabetes
  • Checking iron, vitamin and sugar levels
  • Birth preparation courses in health centres
  • Specialised diagnostics for high-risk pregnancies

Additional ultrasound appointments or individualised services are usually only possible privately.

Birth on the Costa Blanca: public and private clinics

The region has several large maternity clinics - both public and private.

Public hospitals

  • Hospital Marina Salud
  • Hospital General Universitario de Alicante
  • Hospital Universitario de Torrevieja
  • Marina Baixa Hospital

In public clinics, natural birth is preferred; medical pain therapy - including epidural anaesthesia - is available on request. Special forms of birth such as water birth should be agreed directly with the clinic in advance.

Private clinics

  • Clínica Vistahermosa
  • Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja
  • Clínica Benidorm
  • Hospital HLA San Carlos

Private facilities usually offer single rooms, free choice of doctor and more individualised care - although this depends on the insurance tariff.

Maternity protection, paternity leave and parental leave

Spain has a clearly structured parental protection system:

  • 16 weeks maternity leave, fully tempered
  • 16 weeks paternity leave, equalised
  • Paid breastfeeding time (one hour per working day)
  • Unpaid parental leave of up to three years per child

The benefits are paid via the Seguridad Social applied for. The prerequisite is a sufficient contribution period.

Financial benefits for families

In addition to maternity benefit, there are other benefits:

  • One-off payment of 1,000 euros for low income or multiple births
  • Tax relief of up to 1,200 euros per year (family deduction)
  • Regional subsidies via the Generalitat Valenciana

Important: Many applications must be submitted within six months of the birth.

After the birth: deadlines and formalities

Within 72 hours, the application is submitted to the Registro Civil. The newborn is then placed in the Seguridad Social reported in order to be medically insured.

Relevant for German-speaking parents: If you need a German birth certificate, please contact the relevant consulate in the Valencia or Alicante region.

The medical infrastructure on the Costa Blanca is solid. If you organise appointments early on, observe deadlines and are aware of services, you can rely on well-structured support during pregnancy and birth.

For many families on the Costa Blanca, this is not the question, whether support is available - but how to use it efficiently.
