The statue of the Virgin Mary is then carried in a procession to the harbour. From there, the maritime procession through the bay sets off on Thursday – meaning that in 2026 it will take place earlier than in previous years. On the water, the traditional blessings are performed and wreaths are laid in memory of those who have died at sea. Upon return, 21 gun salutes are fired. The Marinera de Honor recites a verse in honour of the patron saint from the balcony of the Fishermen’s Association before the statue is escorted back to the church.
On Saturday, 18 July, the flower-laying ceremony begins at 7.00 pm. The procession will proceed from the Paseo de Colón to the Plaza de la Señoría. The festival commemorates the attack of 1538 and the legend according to which Santa Marta saved the town from being captured. For eight days, the processions of the Moorish and Christian sides dominate the streetscape, the music and the festivities.
On Friday 24 July, the Entrada de Bandas kicks off the main festival programme. On Saturday and Sunday, the parades of the Moorish and Christian Filaes take place, featuring intricately crafted costumes, music groups and accompanying processions. On Monday, the programme features the Alijo and the Embajadas.
The main event takes place on Tuesday, 28 July. The Desembarco begins on the beach before daybreak. Boats approach the coast, the Moorish troops land on the beach, and the historic battle is re-enacted with music, lighting and pyrotechnics. This is followed by the Embajada Cristiana and the Reconquista. On Wednesday 29 July, the town celebrates the feast day of Santa Marta. A paella competition and a children’s parade bring the week to a close.

13 August to 16 August – Fiestas de San Roque
Barrio de San Roque, Alicante. San Roque is one of Alicante’s most traditional neighbourhood festivals. The celebrations take place above the old town, in the immediate vicinity of the Castillo de Santa Bárbara. The neighbourhood is narrow, steep and has a strong sense of community – and it is precisely this that defines the character of the fiesta. Religious ceremonies, music, communal meals and street events bring residents and visitors together. Unlike the major Hogueras festivals, the focus here is not on the whole city but on a historic neighbourhood. Access by car is restricted; walking from the city centre is usually the more practical option. Alicante City Council
