Avoid damp & mould on the Costa Blanca

Damp and mould on the Costa Blanca

Mould on the Costa Blanca is often caused by damp. Find out the causes, immediate measures and how to protect your home effectively.

When the days get shorter in autumn and the first damp nights set in, the tricky time begins for many house and flat owners on the Costa Blanca: mould and damp make their appearance. Whether it's a musty odour in the bedroom, stains on the walls or peeling plaster - it's not just old fincas that are affected, but also modern new builds. The combination of high humidity, inadequate insulation and infrequent heating creates ideal conditions for mould growth. The construction of many houses that stand directly on the ground without continuous waterproofing is particularly problematic.

Two main causes: Condensation and rising damp
Condensation occurs when warm indoor air meets cold walls. Typical symptoms are steamed-up windows, dark spots behind furniture or mould in the bathroom.
Capillary rising damp mainly affects ground floor flats and older buildings. Without a moisture barrier, the walls absorb the water from the floor like a sponge. The consequences: salty deposits, flaking plaster and a musty odour - often without visible mould.

Prevention - with simple but effective methods
Complete isolation as in Central Europe is rare on the Costa Blanca. Nevertheless, there are proven measures that significantly reduce the risks:
- Shock ventilation instead of permanent tilting: Open all windows several times a day and ensure a draught - especially after cooking, showering or sleeping.
- Use electric dehumidifiers: They are indispensable in bedrooms, bathrooms and cellars.
- Keep temperatures stable: Fewer extreme fluctuations mean less condensation.
- Move furniture away from external walls: a distance of 5-10 cm allows air circulation.
- No boxes or carpets directly on the tiles: Particularly important on ground floors to avoid waterlogging.

In the case of rising damp, the following applies: only structural renovation will provide a lasting remedy. Local specialist companies offer injections and sealing - temporary coatings do not solve the problem.

When the mould is already there
- Walls: Smaller surfaces can be cleaned with alcohol (at least 70%) or suitable anti-mould agents - but only in the case of condensation mould.
- Furniture: Remove infested cupboards, blow dry and treat the backs. Spacers improve air circulation. Replace pressboard furniture if heavily infested.
- Textiles: Wash clothes at 60 °C, air cupboards regularly and do not dry laundry in closed rooms. If in doubt, have leather or upholstery professionally cleaned.

Damp and mould are among the most common housing problems on the Costa Blanca during the autumn and winter season. If you know the causes, distinguish between condensation mould and rising damp and use locally adapted solutions, you can prevent major damage - and get your home through the damp season.

Immediate measures for damp & mould

▶ Ventilate in bursts: Cross-ventilate for 5-10 minutes several times a day.
▶ Switch on the dehumidifier: Run in the bedroom, especially at night.
Move furniture away: Maintain a distance of 5-10 cm from external walls.
▶ Check textiles: Leave cupboards open, do not dry laundry inside.
▶ Small mould stains: Treat with alcohol (70%) - only for condensation mould.
▶ Rising damp: No cosmetic measures - call in a specialist company.
