Don't you know the feeling that time is slipping away between your fingers? This is particularly noticeable just before Christmas. There's so much to do. But Advent is supposed to be completely different. The church year gives us four long weeks to prepare for this celebration. Sunday after Sunday, we light one candle after another on the Advent wreath. Only at the end do the many candles on the Christmas tree finally light up.
In some churches in our region, the nativity scenes are gradually being set up. Mary and Joseph set off on their journey. Two nativity figures travelling through the whole church. They begin their journey at the entrance door and slowly make their way to the altar. Little by little, they are joined by animals, shepherds and kings - until they all arrive at the cot on Christmas Eve. Advent means arrival. There is a long way to go before Christmas so that the soul can follow.
Advent, this old tradition, knows about this. Hidden within it is the realisation that things need to grow and develop. People need leisure, especially for the big festivals. Not everything has to be quick and fast, on the contrary: only those who take their time will discover how valuable this time is. I am learning to wait. I have patience. I expect something. And while nature around us becomes darker and cooler, the symbols and signs become stronger. First the Advent wreath, then the tree. First a candle, then a wreath of lights. First a biscuit, then the festive meal.
By the way: according to time researchers, an average of four minutes a day belong to God. That's not much, but at least it's a start. And what was that again? Advent means arrival. God himself makes his way to us, quietly and secretly. And he who comes brings a lot of time for us. His gift in the middle of a time in which time is becoming ever more precious. We cordially invite you to spend this time together in a church service!
