On 22 September, citizens in the Autonomous Community of Valencia will be able to use public transport free of charge, including Metrovalència, TRAM d'Alacant, TRAM de Castelló and MetroBus. This was announced by the Councillor for Environment, Infrastructure and Territory, Vicente Martínez Mus, on the occasion of World Car Free Day. The campaign is part of Mobility Week (16-22 September), which promotes public transport as an environmentally friendly alternative to private vehicles.
The „SUBE“ campaign, which encourages the use of public transport, particularly with a focus on accessibility, is running in parallel. In addition to this campaign, the existing discounts on tickets will remain in place until January 2025 and free travel for young people under the age of 31 will continue until the end of December.
Martínez Mus emphasised the success of these measures, which is reflected in a steady increase in passenger numbers: In Alacant, the TRAM is expected to reach around 20 million passengers by the end of 2023, almost twice as many as five years ago. The promotion of sustainable mobility in Alacant continues with the construction of an intermodal railway station, work on which will begin in October.
