Aena has put out to tender a new taxiway for Alicante-Elche Airport in preparation for the planned expansion. The work, which is expected to cost 17.5 million euros, will speed up aircraft traffic from the car parks to the runway and increase the airport's efficiency. Construction will take 27 months so as not to disrupt ongoing operations.
The project includes paving the extended area, adapting the drainage system and installing new lighting masts and beacons. In addition, the fencing and the airport perimeter road will be extended and the FOD barrier in the extended area will be adapted.
These measures, together with the forthcoming tender to expand the terminal, should significantly increase the airport's capacity. Minister Óscar Puente announced that the project will increase capacity to 26 million passengers, which will require an investment of 600 million euros. The construction of the taxiway is part of the investment plan for 2027 to 2031, with the tender due to be launched this year.
While the Spanish government supports the expansion of the existing terminal, the regional government is calling for a second runway. Construction of the new runway is expected to begin this year as soon as the contract has been awarded and all administrative procedures have been finalised.
