Between tourism and everyday life, an art scene is unfolding on the Costa Blanca that shines not through large museums, but through proximity. Anyone travelling with open eyes will encounter it almost casually - in workshops, in squares, on façades.
In Altea, between whitewashed walls and blue domes, numerous artists work in small studios. Some of them welcome visitors spontaneously, others seem to be secluded - visible only through discreet signs. The Fundación Eberhard Schlotter forms a quiet centre where European art history is cultivated and continued.
With established galleries such as the Isabel Bilbao Galería de Arte or the Galería Marqueze, Jávea complements a scene that is also characterised by open workshops, creative workshops and art markets. Art is not only viewed here - it is shared and discussed.
The creative scene is also present in Dénia and Benissa. The Centro d'Art Taller d'Ivars is one of those places where exhibitions, performances and spontaneous projects are regularly organised - often in the middle of everyday urban life.
Art that leads through the centre of the town
Not every artistic work needs a frame. In Moraira, sculptures in roundabouts tell of old crafts, the proximity to the sea and the agricultural heritage.
Altea, on the other hand, uses the promenade and old town as an open exhibition space - modern sculptures blend naturally into the cityscape.
In Alfaz del Pi, there are two sculpture gardens to discover: the Klein-Schreuder Sculpture Garden with over 40 permanent installations and the Museo Delso, which not only offers art but also cultural events in a tranquil setting.
A particularly open approach can be seen in Els Poblets
The Persianes amb Art project, initiated in 2023, has had a lasting impact on the townscape. Over 50 painted shutters tell stories - of the sea, of life, of remembrance. The works are permanently visible and are complemented by events and new art activities.
Art also becomes unexpectedly visible in the Portal de la Marina shopping centre in Ondara: in the Escapararte project, shop windows become exhibition space - the public encounters painting, illustration and photography in places where they hardly expect to see art.
A scene, supported by exchange
What makes this diversity possible are active networks: the Associació d'Artistes de la Marina Alta brings artists together, creates spaces for new ideas and organises exhibitions and workshops.
The Arts Society Marina Alta, on the other hand, offers a platform for anyone interested in art - regardless of language or origin - with lectures, excursions and open formats.
What counts here is not the spectacle, but the exchange. It's not about big names, but about living culture - accessible, cross-generational and firmly anchored in everyday life.
Art as part of everyday life
On the Costa Blanca, you don't need elaborate staging to experience art. It can be seen in painted shops, in open workshops, on traffic islands and in quiet courtyards.
Sometimes loud, sometimes quiet - but always present
Marina Alta and Marina Baixa do not offer a large museum landscape. But they show how culture can become a natural part of the public space - lively, accessible and often just a glance away.
