Celebrating Christmas on the Costa Blanca: Masses, parades – Cabalgata de Reyes & local rituals

Despite its international character, the religious aspect of the holidays is still very much alive on the Costa Blanca. The Misa del Gallo on 24 December is a fixed part of the programme in almost every parish – from the Basilica of San Nicolás in Alicante to the mountain church in Altea and the parish churches of Torrevieja, Dénia and Villajoyosa.

With numerous international communities, Christmas is celebrated in many languages in many places. German-language church services are held in Calpe, La Nucía, Torrevieja and Alicante, among other places; English-speaking communities organise Advent and carol services in Jávea, Benidorm and Quesada/Rojales.

The highlight comes on 5 January: the Cabalgata de Reyes, which attracts tens of thousands of people in Alicante, Torrevieja, Benidorm, Dénia, Santa Pola and Elche.

In some coastal towns such as Dénia and Santa Pola, the Three Kings traditionally arrive by boat – an integral part of the regional ritual.

6 January, Día de Reyes, is then a day for families: a quiet holiday when many households cut the Roscón de Reyes and exchange gifts.
