The imposing Montgó, which towers between Dénia and Jávea, is a symbol of the region, and not just because of its majestic silhouette. A legend tells of a Moorish princess who hid her immense gold treasure in a cave on the Montgó during the Christian reconquest. The cave is said to have been sealed with the help of a djinn - and access to it remains a mystery to this day.
Walkers and hikers report strange engravings and signs on the rock faces that supposedly point to the treasure. Archaeologists have actually found artefacts from the Moorish period, which spice up the myth with a hint of truth.

In order to protect the treasure, a curse is said to have been pronounced, bringing misfortune to any intruder.

Villena: The greatest treasure of the Bronze Age
Not all of the region's treasures are myths. The so-called „Treasure of Villena“, a find from the Bronze Age, consists of over 50 gold artefacts and is one of the most important discoveries in Europe. The artefacts, which were discovered by chance in the 1960s, are now on display in the Villena Archaeological Museum.
