Hidden treasures - gold and secrets in the mountains

A journey to the legends of the Costa Blanca, that tell of undiscovered riches, curses and mysterious places.

The mountains and caves of the region not only harbour natural beauty, but also a rich treasure trove of myths and tales. For centuries, the idea of hidden riches has inspired adventurers and historians alike. Many of these stories are rooted in the battles between Moors and Christians, when soldiers left their treasures behind to escape more quickly - or deliberately hid them from their enemies.

Montgó: The treasure of the princess
The imposing Montgó, which towers between Dénia and Jávea, is a symbol of the region, and not just because of its majestic silhouette. A legend tells of a Moorish princess who hid her immense gold treasure in a cave on the Montgó during the Christian reconquest. The cave is said to have been sealed with the help of a djinn - and access to it remains a mystery to this day.

Walkers and hikers report strange engravings and signs on the rock faces that supposedly point to the treasure. Archaeologists have actually found artefacts from the Moorish period, which spice up the myth with a hint of truth.

Cova del Canelobre: the underground cathedral
Just a few kilometres from Busot, the Cova del Canelobre attracts visitors with its breathtaking stalactite landscape and acoustics. But in addition to its geological beauty, the cave also harbours a legend: It is said that Moorish rulers hid valuable treasures here when they left the region.
During a guided tour, visitors learn about treasure hunters who have combed the cave for hidden chambers. Although no riches were found, the idea remains fascinating - and the cave itself an unforgettable experience.

The curse of the Bernia treasure
The rugged cliffs of the Bernia massif are not only a hiker's paradise, but also the setting for gloomy tales. One legend tells of Moorish soldiers who hid their gold reserves in the caves of the mountains before they were defeated in a decisive battle. In order to protect the treasure, a curse is said to have been pronounced, bringing misfortune to any intruder.

To this day, hikers report strange noises and a feeling of trepidation that overcomes them in the vicinity of the caves. The treasure remains missing - or perhaps it is still waiting to be discovered.

Villena: The greatest treasure of the Bronze Age
Not all of the region's treasures are myths. The so-called „Treasure of Villena“, a find from the Bronze Age, consists of over 50 gold artefacts and is one of the most important discoveries in Europe. The artefacts, which were discovered by chance in the 1960s, are now on display in the Villena Archaeological Museum.
TipThe museum (Calle San José 7) is open from Tuesday to Sunday. A guided tour of the exhibition tells the story behind this extraordinary find.
