Not every excursion has to be spectacular to make an impression. Sometimes all you need is a well-developed path, the right light and a destination that combines history and views - like the Faro de l'Albir. The lighthouse, which has watched over the bay of Albir since the 19th century, is the centre of a small but varied network of paths in the Serra Gelada Nature Park between Albir and Benidorm. The way there: as accessible as it is scenic.
Asphalt, views, exhibition - The classic lighthouse trail
The main path to the Faro is around five kilometres long (there and back), completely laid out and barrier-free. It follows the former supply route and is suitable for all age groups - whether on foot, with a pushchair or by bike. Information boards along the way provide information about the geology, vegetation and local marine life. On clear days, the view extends across the bay of Altea to the Peñón de Ifach. Those who arrive at their destination are rewarded with more than just a panoramic view: the lighthouse building now houses a small exhibition on the history of the region's maritime signalling system.
For the experienced: Ascent to the Alt del Governador
If the direct route is too gentle for you, you can take the path halfway up to the Alt del Governador - the highest point in the park. The steep ascent demands fitness, but also offers spectacular panoramic views
Sure-footedness and sturdy shoes are a must, as the route leads over unpaved and narrow paths. Once at the top, a panoramic view awaits, which - in good weather - extends as far as the neighbouring island of Ibiza.
Wild coastal path for explorers
The third option leads along the rugged cliffs. Less developed, with a varied landscape, but challenging in places. The path leads to hidden coves, along narrow paths and through Mediterranean vegetation. If you choose this section, you should be sure-footed and allow enough time. In return, the route offers a pure nature experience - far from the main paths.
Experience nature - without a long journey
The Faro de l'Albir is an example of what local recreation on the Costa Blanca can look like: versatile, close to nature and suitable for different fitness levels. If you set off early, you can enjoy the cooler hours and the special light of the mornings - with far-reaching views included.
Whether for a few steps or ambitious metres in altitude - the path to the lighthouse is always a good decision.
