Sometimes it's worth looking beyond your own horizon - or in this case, beyond the provincial border. The Bioparc Valencia may be a good hour and a half away from MarinaBaixa/Alta, but it is a destination that will not only delight animal lovers. The modern zoo is considered one of the most exciting in Europe - not least because of its unique concept, which immerses visitors in natural habitats instead of seeing animals behind bars.
Experience nature in the centre of the city
The Bioparc is located at the western end of Turia Park, on a former riverbed that is now a green lung for the city. Instead of traditional enclosures, the park favours so-called „zoo immersion“: invisible ditches, watercourses and rocks separate animals and people - creating the feeling of being in the middle of a savannah or tropical rainforest.
A special highlight - especially for children - is the lemur enclosure, in which the lively half-monkeys do not sit behind bars, but jump around freely among the visitors. If you're lucky, you can experience the animals up close - and see how curious and playful they are.
From the savannah to the jungle
The circular route leads through different continents:
- African savannah with giraffes, rhinos and zebras
- Equatorial forest with gorillas, chimpanzees and colourful birds
- Madagascar with lemurs and rare reptiles
- Wetlands with hippos and crocodiles
The design is so detailed that even plants and stones are modelled on the original habitats.
More than a zoo - also a place of research
The Bioparc works closely with the University of Valencia and international nature conservation projects. In addition to species-appropriate husbandry, the focus is on research and education - an exciting aspect, especially for school classes and families. Workshops, guided tours and feeding sessions impart knowledge in an entertaining way.
A trip to the Bioparc Valencia is no ordinary visit to the zoo, but an intense nature experience. If you are travelling with children, you should take a whole day - and don't forget your camera.
