Blackout in Spain - the situation is normalising on the Costa Blanca
Blackout Spain April 2025 After the power blackout on the Costa Blanca: stay calm, be well prepared On Monday 28 April 2025, the Costa Blanca was hit by a blackout.
One year after the DANA disaster, the Comunidad Valenciana is once again in the spotlight - this time politically. The resignation of regional president Carlos Mazón marks the end of a crisis of confidence and the beginning of a transitional phase.
One year after the devastating floods in October 2024, the political reappraisal has reached its climax: Carlos Mazón, President of the Generalitat Valenciana and leading representative of the Partido Popular, resigned on 3 November 2025. Two days later, his resignation was confirmed in the Official State Gazette (BOE). Until a successor is elected, Mazón will continue to run the government on an interim basis - but the region is in a political transition phase.
The catastrophe that cost trust
The severe DANA in autumn 2024 claimed over 200 lives and caused massive damage. It quickly became clear that warnings had come too late and crisis coordination had failed. Criticism of Mazón's government was unrelenting - delayed reactions, unclear responsibilities and a lack of preparation dominated the public debate.
From crisis manager to resignation
Mazón held on to his post for months, but internal investigations and political tensions within the PP weakened his position. Investigations into possible dereliction of duty increased the pressure. In his resignation statement, Mazón spoke openly about exhaustion and responsibility. The sentence „Ya no puedo más“ („I can do no more“) came to symbolise his political defeat.
Who follows - and what happens next?
According to the statutes of the Comunidad Valenciana, a new president must be elected within twelve days (deadline expires on 19 November). The favourite is Juan Francisco Pérez Llorca, mayor of Benidorm and party colleague of Mazón. The Partido Popular is endeavouring to reach an agreement with coalition partner Vox in order to avoid new elections. If this does not succeed, the Valencians could be called to the polls again at the beginning of 2026.
Significance for the Costa Blanca
For the region, the resignation means political uncertainty. Flood protection, infrastructure and tourism promotion projects have been put on ice for the time being. Communities hope that the new government will bring stability - and learn the lessons from the DANA disaster.
Between coming to terms and a new beginning
Mazón's resignation ends a term of office characterised by crises. It symbolises an attempt to take responsibility - but also the price of political failure. The coming weeks will show how the Comunidad Valenciana will deal with the consequences of extreme weather and governance in the future.
