From many places on the coast between Dénia and Altea, Ibiza can be recognised on a clear day - a bright line behind the sea. If you can see it, you can go there: The fast ferry from Baleària departs daily from Dénia and reaches Ibiza Town in just over two hours. For many who live on the Costa Blanca, this is almost around the corner - and yet it's another world.
Ibiza Town is not a postcard motif, but a functioning small metropolis with a harbour, authorities, shops and real everyday life. At the same time, there is an astonishing diversity: old city walls, studios, music, bars, boats - all in a small space. In the Dalt Vila, it's worth just setting off: Stairs, views, narrow paths that suddenly lead back to the sea.
Down on Passeig de Vara de Rey, you'll find what Ibiza has to offer all year round: People who stay because they live and work here. Small cafés, boutiques, market halls and squares where the day passes slowly.
Life seems improvised, but well-rehearsed - typically Spanish, only more compact.
A short walk leads to Playa d'en Bossa. Noisy and crowded in summer, now pleasantly quiet. The well-known hotels such as Ushuaïa or Hard Rock are there, but without the show effect. If you like, you can have a coffee on the beach, watch the ferries or simply watch the water.
In the evening, many people are drawn back to the old town. There are good restaurants, honest tapas, simple bars with a view of the harbour. No big programme, no compulsory visit - simply a place that feels right if you like Spain and are looking for a few new impressions.
The next morning or the morning after, we head back to Dénia - two hours to sort out what we have experienced. Ibiza is closer, more accessible and more varied than you might think. You only have to visit once to understand why many islanders like to come to the mainland - and vice versa.
