Wines of the Marina Alta & Baixa - Moscatel, Mistela & more Discover Moscatel, Mistela & regional wines from Marina Alta
Wine is one of the silent narrators of the marinas. Sometimes fresh and light, sometimes sweet and festive, sometimes modern and international. Whether Mistela from Xaló or red wines from the high altitudes of Sella - both regions bring their own character to the glass. This part of the series is dedicated to the wines that have long been more than just accompaniments to a meal: they are an expression of regional culture.
Variety in a glass
Moscatel produces a wide variety of wines: fresh white wines, light and aromatic, semi-dry varieties with a fine balance or sweet dessert wines that show the full character of the grape.
Almost every winery interprets Moscatel in its own way - from everyday wines for the local market to ambitious creations for export.
Mistela - the sweet sister
Mistela, the sweet liqueur wine made from unfermented must and alcohol, has its own chapter. In the Marina Alta - especially around Xaló, Teulada, Benissa and Llíber - it has been produced for centuries and has found its way onto many festive tables. Today, mistela is experiencing a small renaissance: modern in presentation, internationally recognised and yet deeply rooted in tradition.
Wine culture in the Marina Alta
The valleys of Xaló, Llíber and Parcent are the heart of the Moscatel region. Wines are produced here that have long been recognised beyond the province. Many bodegas open their doors to visitors, offer wine tastings and show how closely nature, craftsmanship and enjoyment are linked.
Wine tradition in the Marina Baixa
To the south, the Marina Baixa has carved out its own place in the wine scene. In L'Alfàs del Pi, for example, the Enrique Mendoza winery is a benchmark for modern cellar technology and international style. In Sella, at the foot of the Sierra de Aitana, small producers such as Mas de Sella experiment with altitude and new cuvées or the Bodega Masos Guadelest in the breathtaking ambience above the mountain village of Guadelest.
More than just a product
Whether Mistela from the Marina Alta or modern red wines from the Marina Baixa - wine is a cultural asset here. You will encounter it at weekly markets, at village festivals, in wineries and in the stories of the winegrowing families.
Moscatel, mistela and co. are not just regional specialities, they are an expression of a way of life that is deeply rooted in both marinas - between tradition and the future, between sweet history and the international stage.
