Digital revolution in healthcare provision

Digitale Revolution in der GesundheitsVersorgung

More efficient processes in Alicante's clinics: With new terminals and screens the healthcare system wants to waiting times and bureaucracy.

A full waiting room, endless queues at the registration desk and the queasy feeling of being called out in front of the whole team - scenes like these are soon to be a thing of the past in Alicante's health centres. With the introduction of a digital appointment management system, the regional Ministry of Health not only wants to improve the patient experience, but also relieve the daily routine of medical staff.

How does the new system work?
Digital terminals and screens have now been installed in 55 health centres and hospitals in the province of Alicante. Patients register themselves on arrival by entering their SIP or NIF number at a terminal in the entrance area.
They then receive a ticket with a personalised code containing all the important information: the time of the appointment, the waiting room and the location of the treatment. Large screens in the waiting area inform patients when it is their turn - discreetly and without calling out names.

„A clear improvement for everyone“
The new system is designed to improve efficiency and privacy in healthcare provision. Bernardo Valdivieso, Regional Secretary for Planning and Digital Transformation, explains: „This system optimises patient flows and facilitates day-to-day work in the healthcare centres. It brings benefits for patients and medical staff alike.“
Some patients are delighted: „It's easier, quicker and less chaotic. You know exactly where you have to go,“ reports María López, who tested the system at her health centre.

Investing in the future
The project is part of the strategy to digitalise the Valencian healthcare system. A total of €10.8 million has been invested, financed by the Next Generation EU fund. In the province of Alicante, the measure includes:
- 221 digital terminals with ticket printers
- 978 Screens in waiting and examination areas
Almost all healthcare centres and hospitals in the region are to be equipped with the new technology by the end of 2025.

What do critics say?
Despite the many advantages, not everything is smooth sailing. „Older people or less tech-savvy patients may have problems with the digital kiosks,“ says Dr Javier García, a GP in Alicante. „Training or support staff are needed so that everyone can really benefit from the system.“ Initial reports of technical failures also show that implementation is not without its challenges.

Where can citizens find information?
Patients can find out more about the use and locations of the new terminals on the website of the regional Ministry of Health: www.san.gva.es.

A step forwards
The digital appointment management system marks a significant step forward for healthcare in Alicante. It shows how technology can improve the daily lives of patients and staff - even if it is not without its initial hurdles. The future of healthcare is digital, and the region is taking a big step in this direction.
Tip: Try out the new system - and be patient if necessary. After all, digitalisation takes time to run perfectly!
