In the mountains, bays and waves of the Costa Blanca, people have for centuries seen - or at least imagined - creatures that transform their surroundings into a fairytale land. From mermaids luring fishermen into the depths to giants shaping mountains, these stories tell not only of fantasy, but also of man's close connection to nature.<\/p>

The Mermaid of Moraira - A Song of Sorrow<\/strong>
The small bay of El Portet in Moraira is considered one of the most romantic places in the region. However, the legend of a mermaid who lived here gives this place a bittersweet flavour.<\/p>

According to legend, a fisherman fell in love with the mermaid who regularly visited him at sunrise. However, their love did not last: she could not leave the depths of the sea and he belonged on land. It is said that her lament sometimes echoes across the water at sunrise, a sad echo of her lost love.
Tip<\/em>A visit to the bay in the early morning not only allows you to experience the beauty of the light - you might even hear the whispering of the waves that inspired the legend.<\/p>

The giant Rold\u00e1n <\/strong>and the Puig Campana<\/strong>
The Puig Campana, an unmistakable mountain near Finestrat, carries a fascinating story in its striking notch. The giant Rold\u00e1n is said to have desperately tried to save his terminally ill lover from the shadow of the mountain. In his rage, he knocked a piece out of the rock, which fell into the sea and formed the Isla de Benidorm.<\/p>

Tip<\/em>The hike around Puig Campana (route PR-CV 289) offers one of the most impressive views on the Costa Blanca. The notch and its legend are easily recognisable from different angles.<\/p>

The dragon of the Montg\u00f3 - <\/strong>A sleeping guardian<\/strong>
The Montg\u00f3, already known for its treasure and magical aura (see article 1: Moors and Christians), harbours another legend. Many compare the silhouette of the mountain to a sleeping dragon, which has led to stories about a monster guarding the caves of the Montg\u00f3.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

It is said that the dragon was defeated by a brave shepherd with a magical lance. However, its shadow is said to still be visible on the rocks at sunset.
Tip<\/em>Visit the Montg\u00f3 Nature Park in the late afternoon. The light of the setting sun gives the mountain an almost supernatural attraction.<\/p>

Tabarca - Nymphs beneath the waves<\/strong>
The aforementioned island of Tabarca (see article 2: Pirates and sailors) is not only known for its pirate history. Fishermen tell of nymphs who dance in the waves at night and lead ships astray with their songs.
Although the nymphs are perhaps only a poetic expression of the island's beauty, the idea of mythical creatures beneath the clear waters remains fascinating.
Tip<\/em>A boat trip to the island, combined with snorkelling in the protected marine reserve, offers a perfect insight into the magic of Tabarca.<\/p>

More magical places<\/strong>
Villajoyosa and the golden tortoise:<\/em> A legend tells of a giant turtle that warned fishermen of a storm. A monument at the harbour commemorates this story.
Alicante and the black eagle<\/em>: The Castillo de Santa B\u00e1rbara<\/em> (see Article 3: Hauntings and ghosts) is said to be protected by an eagle that appears when danger threatens.<\/p>

Practical tips for imagination and nature<\/strong>
El Portet, Moraira<\/em>The bay is a peaceful place for early risers. Parking spaces are limited - come early to enjoy the peace and quiet.
Puig Campana:<\/em> The PR-CV 289 hiking route requires sturdy footwear and stamina. The reward is unforgettable panoramic views.
Tabarca<\/em>Snorkelling in the marine reserve is a must. Ferries depart from Alicante, Santa Pola and Torrevieja.<\/p>

Myths that surround the Costa Blanca <\/strong>bring to life<\/strong>
These stories show how deeply connected the people of the region are to their surroundings. Mermaids, giants and dragons are more than just fantasy - they reflect the attempt to explain the world and understand nature.
Keep your eyes open on your next walk through the mountains or along the coast. Perhaps you will discover a shape in the rock that inspires you, or hear a sound that reminds you of an old legend.
