The so-called „Vías Verdes“ - former railway lines that have been converted into hiking and cycling trails - are particularly popular. One of the longest of these routes runs between Dénia and Villajoyosa and offers a perfect combination of nature experience, cultural discovery and sporting challenge.

The Via Verde - an overview
The Via Verde between Dénia and Villajoyosa is part of a network of hiking trails that aim to promote sustainable tourism while preserving historic transport routes. This route runs along the former railway line and winds its way through the varied landscape of the Marina Alta and Marina Baixa. With a length of around 65 kilometres, it offers hikers and cyclists a unique opportunity to experience the region from a completely new perspective.
The Via Verde runs from the coastal town of Dénia in the north to the picturesque harbour town of Villajoyosa in the south. There are numerous sections along the route that are suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers. The route leads through valleys, along rivers and through small villages, where you can discover sights and culinary delights time and again.

Section 1: From Dénia to Ondara (approx. 12 km)
The Via Verde begins in Dénia, a charming harbour town with views of the imposing Montgó. The starting point is near Dénia train station, where the former railway line begins. This section runs along rolling hills and through agricultural areas known for their lemon and orange groves. The walk is pleasant and ideal for families, as there are hardly any steep climbs.
The route first leads to Ondara, a small town known for its historic centre and bullring. Here you can take a break and enjoy the local specialities in one of the restaurants.

Section 2: From Ondara to Benissa (approx. 18 km)
This part of the route leads further inland, past fields and orchards. Here it is mostly flat until you reach Benissa, one of the oldest towns in the Marina Alta. Benissa impresses with its well-preserved old town centre and the neo-Gothic cathedral „La Purísima“. It is worth taking a stroll through the cobbled streets before setting off on the next section of the Via Verde.
There are numerous viewpoints along this section of the route, from which you can enjoy fantastic views of the surrounding mountains and the sea. Especially in spring, when the almond trees are in bloom, this is one of the most picturesque sections of the Via Verde.

Section 3: From Benissa to Altea (approx. 20 km)
The hike now leads through the mountains of the Marina Baixa towards the coastal town of Altea. This section is a little more challenging, as there are slight inclines and mountainous passages. But the effort is worth it: the views of the Mediterranean and the surrounding hills are breathtaking. Shortly before reaching Altea, there is a unique panoramic view of the famous blue domed roof of the church „Nuestra Señora del Consuelo“, the town's landmark. Altea itself, with its narrow streets and idyllic artists' village, invites you to linger and relax in one of the cafés by the sea or visit the numerous art galleries and boutiques.

Section 4: From Altea
to Villajoyosa (approx. 15 km)
The last section of the Via Verde leads along the coast to Villajoyosa, a colourful harbour town known for its colourful houses and chocolate and turron production. This part of the route is particularly picturesque, as there are always fantastic views of the glittering Mediterranean Sea.
Villajoyosa, or „La Vila Joiosa“ as it is known in Valencian, is the perfect end point for the hike. Here you can take another break - either enjoy fresh fish or delicious tapas in one of the many restaurants or visit the famous chocolate museum. The town also offers numerous opportunities to relax after the hike, whether on the beach or on a walk along the waterfront.

Places of interest along the Via Verde
The Via Verde between Dénia and Villajoyosa not only leads through beautiful natural landscapes, but also past numerous historical and cultural sights.
